Moment by Moment

A new year.

From 2017, we have now entered 2018. Lots of things changes, whether we like it or not. Different things changes for different people.

Some may have a new job that are closer to what they dreamed of doing since childhood or maybe it is their dream job. Some may finish up new house that they had spent large amount of time and money in constructing it, a dream house of their own. Some may also welcome a new member into their family with the birth of a lovely child.

Things can also change for the worst, in a way. Some may failed a subject that they had worked so hard to excel but still it does not work out. Some may have to move far away from their loved ones for the sake of a brighter future. Some may no longer be in contact with the person that fill their days with frequent texts and calls, a person so familiar now turns into a stranger.

Time goes on and every moment that passes, things changes. For better or for worse, depends on the choices we make. Each decision opens up doors and at the same time closes several doors, and that is our future that we ourselves shaped, through those choices. But of course, there are things that have already been set by Allah SWT.

Changes that come in our life can be a good news, a thing to be celebrated and can be something that we looked forward to all this time. Changes can also be something unexpected and difficult, something that scares us as it is so unfamiliar and it can be something that make us feel like there is no hope in life.

It’s okay.

Changes can be scary or maybe disheartening and this is not a shameful thing to feel. Some people ridicule others for being scared of something they are not familiar with, when in reality, it is natural for us to feel so. It is a way that our mind defence us from potential harm. Going to somewhere new for a trip maybe, can be exciting as it is a new place to venture. At the same time, it can be quite scary as we have no idea what can happen there, a place where we are not familiar with.

In times like this, courage is what we need. Saying this is easier than actually doing it and that is the truth. Being courageous requires us to prepare our body and mind to step out of our comfort zone and it is no easy feat. This means that every time we do something different and even making a choice to do it, we are being brave. We should be proud of ourselves for having such courage even if it just a thought.

In preparing our mind and body to break out of the comfort zone, it will be good to have a guidance from someone who had experienced it first-hand. We can also research more about its pros and cons. Read more, learn more and improve more. Knowledge is a powerful tool, so we should use it to our advantage. With the information in hand, the fear will diminish by itself and replaced by confidence.

With these changes, our mind or more precisely, our way of thinking also changes. A broader view brings a broader mind as more experiences can never be harmful. An open-minded individual can actually bring changes to the world, even if it takes a long time.

“Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.”
–Jim Rohn

Changes also brings endings with it.

“Ends are not bad things, they just mean that something else is about to begin. And there are many things that don’t really end, anyway, they just begin again in a new way. Ends are not bad and many ends aren’t really an ending; some things are never-ending.”
― C. JoyBell C.

Like the above quote mentioned, ends are not bad things. Ending of a good thing does not always have to be heart-breaking. Ending of a bad thing does not always have to be a relief. The end of something, just like the last sentence of a chapter, opens up a new beginning. A new chapter. Maybe the chapter will be even better than the previous, maybe it won’t. We have to go through it first in order to know the story.

But of course, endings can be a little sad. We have to bid farewell to things or even people that we had spent so much time with. So many memories, even the most insignificant moments, comes from it. This is a given. But let’s not forget to look forward to new beginnings. What we learned from the past, take it as a lesson and use them for our future journey.

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
― Nelson Mandela
